Social media rumors on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have been circulating that VA will grant 100 percent service-connected disability compensation for those veterans exposed to tainted lots of the anthrax vaccine. The same vaccine allegedly used on veterans and active duty service members. The rumor is unequivocally false.
The potential side effects of anthrax is considered to be generally mild and temporary. The VA continues to evaluate the health effects of Gulf War vaccinations, including anthrax and botulinum toxoid. Other drugs and medications being studied include Pyridostigmine bromide, a pre-treatment drug taken by service members during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm to protect against nerve agent attacks.
