Q841:  I’m 100% Service connected. How much will the VA pay for burial services if I choose cremation?  Is there a way I can prepay so my wife doesn’t have to wait until the VA pays her back or she gets money from an insurance policy?  No we are not disciplined enough to save the money for future funeral expenses.

A1:  I buried my dear wife back in 2017 at a veterans cemetery here in NJ, I paid nothing for her burial. I did pay for her casket and transportation from the facility she died in to the funeral home and the funeral home costs, which really were not much. I will be buried with my wife at no cost.  (MB)  3/28/22

A2:  There is a $700.00 burial reimbursement allowance if your death is because of service connected reasons. $300.00 if your death is because of non- service connected reasons. Go to VA.com and check out Veteran Death Benefits.  (PD)  3/28/22

A3:  The short answer is "no" you can't prepay with the VA. You can, however, prepay with a local funeral home that you plan on handling your affairs. The amount the VA pays does not depend on your service connected disability percentage. The amount depends on whether or not your death is deemed a service connected death or a non service connected death. The VA pays $2000 if your death is deemed service connected. For death deemed not service connected and after 10/01/2021, the VA pays $300 for the burial allowance ($828 if hospitalized by the VA) and $828 for the plot allowance.  (DS)  3/28/22
