Q825: I am 100 percent disabled, I’m also a diabetic from Agent Orange, should I file for that too since I’m already 100%? I know I won’t get any more money, but I was thinking if I pass from diabetes, my wife won’t be able to get any of my disability since I haven’t filed for that.
A1: If you are 100% for 10 years or more, it will not matter what you pass away from. However, I would still file and add diabetes. If you currently die of diabetes or a complication for such, it is a pain in the butt to have it added to your file, after the fact and then get the DIC for your wife. (RJ) 2/15/22
A2: You are correct. Our policy is to not file for things that won't ultimately cause your demise. A disability that could cause your death and is a sure thing is something we definitely recommend filing for. There is a chance you could get more than 100%, money wise, with special monthly compensations (SMC)s. There are secondary conditions, such as ED, that could be related to DM II. (DS) 2/15/22
A3: Yes, file for the diabetes if that would happen to be a contributing factor to your passing it would make it easier on her. Now a Veteran is to be total and permanent for 10 years for the spouse to be eligible for the Dependent Ideminty Compensation. That is a big misunderstanding that service officers don't educate the Veterans and spouses on how to qualify for this benefit. (GR) 2/15/22
