Q817:  I am married and my first 2022 disability payment showed this as with dependent, now my second payment as being single. Why is this happening? I am 72 and married, what is going on?

A1:  Without looking at your file I would only have to guess but it should be an easy fix.  My guess the VA sent you a 21-0538 (status of dependents and if you didn't receive it or send it back they drop the dependents. You should have received a letter telling you they were doing this so if you didn't get this there may be an address problem. I work for the American Legion and if we had your POA I could find out what happened if you have a different POA then just call them and let them look.  (ST)  2/10/22

A2:  The VA will send out a letter and ask the veterans to verify that your dependents are still living and that you are still married and if you did not respond to that letter the VA will drop them from your payment and it will be reduced.  (GR)  2/10/22

A3:  The VA periodically sends out a VA Form 21-0538, Mandatory Status of Dependents. The VA mail has been messed up in the last couple of years and have been, at times, 3-4 months behind getting you your VA mail. If you don't return the VA Form 21-0538, the VA removes your dependents. If you have an accredited service officer, they can look into VBMS and see what's happened and quickly get it reconciled. The VA may have made a mistake and your dependent dropped out.  At any rate, contact your rep.  (DS)  2/10/22
