A1: To qualify for IU, if you have only one disability, then the rating has to be 60% or higher. If you have more than one disability, then the overall rating has to be 70% with at least one of your disabilities being 40%. Your disabilities have to prevent you from obtaining or maintaining gainful employment. Without knowing your particular disabilities and what the VA said in your denial, it would be hard for me to speculate on what to do. (DS) 1/7/22
A2: Nobody has probably never explain to you the qualifications for IU. In order to qualify for IU you have to have a 60% disability rating for one disability or 7% with 40% for one disability rating. Doctors can write in your records that you are totally disable but for IU through the VA unless you meet the qualifications they will denied it. (GR) 1/7/22
A3: When you appealed, did you go before a judge?
Did you explain your situation concerning travel?
Have you turned in your drivers license because of your doctor's information?
If you are still holding a drivers license, the VA could see this as a sign that you can drive.
Remember, the VA is looking at your ability to perform any type of occupation. This could also include working from home. I have a good friend who is at 80% and she works as a shipping dispatcher from her home and in her PJs. (RJ) 1/7/22
Q810: I filed for IU in 2018 and was denied. I appealed and was denied again. My VA doctor put in my notes that I am prohibited from driving due to my service-connected disabilities. My IU was based on not being able to drive. I live in a rural area with no public transportation, how am I supposed to get to a job? I live alone and I don’t know anyone who could drive me to a job and pick me up so why won’t the VA approve me for IU?
