Q774:  I would like to know why my husband's disability check was cut in half?  It went from $3900 something to $1900 something.  And, now he has prostate cancer.  In 2014 he had the surgery for the cancer and now he has incontinent and has ED.  I've not had sex since he had the surgery.  He went to his representative who said he would get it back with him but has done nothing since September 2020 when he got notice of it.  Please help us we are going to lose our home.

A1:  When a veteran develops cancer, in your case, prostate cancer, the VA rates the veteran at 100% as long as the cancer is active. When the treatment is complete for the cancer and the cancer is no longer active, then the VA rates the veteran on the residuals of the cancer. ED is a special monthly comp that is paid to the veterans with service related ED. a common residual from prostate cancer treatment. Incontinence is another residual common with prostate cancer treatment. If the cancer has returned or the residuals have gotten worse, then visit an accredited veteran service officer and reopen the veteran's claim for a possible increase. On a side note, if the veteran passes for something that may be related to the prostate cancer, make sure the person completing the death cert includes prostate cancer/residuals. That way the surviving spouse may be entitled to Dependency Indemnity Compensation.  (DS)  9/29/21

A2:   I'm sorry to hear of your difficulties. Please note that it may NOT be that your representative is "doing nothing". There may not be anything he can do at this time since ALL claims have been delayed (sometimes by months and months) due to the VA slooooowed all claims down "because of covid". I'm sorry, but your claim is just gonna take awhile.  (KD)  9/29/21

A3:  Unfortunately they only keep the issue at 100% until the cancer is gone.  After that they only rate the residuals of the cancer and if they are higher get a DBQ filled out and ask for an increase.  Also depression secondary to his cancer and residuals is a definite possibility.  So it is correct in theory but there may be things you can do to get it back to 100% go and see a service officer and mention the stuff I have mentioned.  (ST)  9/29/21
