Q767:  What can I do about this?  I am young 38 but have had probably 20 lipomas removed.  I never had a lipoma until after service where I was a fuels system mechanic for 4 years. Is there anything that can help me?

A1:   If you believe the lipomas are related to your service then ask your treating physician if they would write you a nexus letter.  All the doctor has to do is to say the lipomas are "as likely as not" or "more likely than not" related to your exposure to fuel as a fuel systems mechanic.  Those two statements tell the VA that there is a 50/50 chance the lipomas are related to your military service. The VA calls this "equipoise."  VA law states that when the decision is in equipoise, then they have to go in favor of the veteran.  If your physician will not write you the nexus letter, then file the claim anyway. The VA will ask a doctor to render an opinion as to the relationship between the lipomas and your military service.  (DS)  8/27/21
