Q759:  I am already established with direct deposit for my disability payment. Why is it that my mileage compensation can't be a direct deposit vs waiting up to more than a month to receive it? Example......I received an invoice for May 20, 2021 for mileage reimbursement that did not include any payment. When I called Gainesville, Florida VA finance, I was told other Vets had experienced the same issue and that I needed to wait a couple more days to see if the reimbursement arrives. This is July 2021, still no payment and I called about 3 weeks ago. Direct deposit for mileage reimbursement would take care of this. MY OPINION...

A1:   VA Disability Compensation payments come from a difference branch of the VA than the one that provides healthcare. Likewise the branch that provides Education benefits and Guaranteed Home Loans. These separate Branches Do Not Talk to each other very well. The Healthcare Branch does not have direct access to the financial information that the Comp & Pension Branch has on you, so it takes longer to process your travel/mileage claim. Probably take an Act of Congress to change that.  (DJ)  7/11/21

A2:  Since 2013, the US Treasury has required the use of direct deposit for many government payments, such as veterans benefits, Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Railroad Retirement Board, Department of Labor (Black Lung), and Office of Personnel Management benefit checks. I also receive mileage for VA medical. The last time I filed a voucher, they told me I could not be paid until I provided Travel my DD information. I provided Travel and my payment was direct deposited. Several of the travel sections got behind in processing travel reimbursements. I don't know if that's the case in your situation. You also have to file for reimbursement w/in 30 days. Most VA medical locations have a Kiosk machine to file for travel. In certain situations, you will have to file a VA Form 10-3542. If you filed for reimbursement on the Kiosk, you have proof you filed. If you used a VA Form 10-3542, it is harder to prove the received the form unless you handed it to them in person. I hope you receive your reimbursement soon.  (DS)  7/12/21
