Q706: I will be losing my home when the moratorium on evictions is lifted. I do not have sufficient income to rent an apartment with my wife. Is there any assistance available to a veteran in New Jersey?

A1: Use va.gov search box (homeless), look for Veterans Experiencing Homelessness link, read information, includes homelessness imminent danger, call free phone number, calls are answered 24/7, provide information, asked for on phone, follow information provided. Several, programs available for veterans, providing help, finding a place to live, explained by a counselor from VA. One does initial intake of information about situation, forwarded to closest VA, veteran counselor works with veteran, and not some government agency. Do not assume only government housing, multiple programs explained by caseworker to provide help. Not sure about the back rent, discuss it with counselor. Myself, apartment complex was income-based, government mailed letters to residents. Telling everyone, we need to start looking, for another place to live, and vague on some sort of voucher. A2: Every VA Health Care Center has a Homeless Outreach Co-ordinator. Start there, even if you are not in the VA healthcare system. Ask your local Senior Center, or State/County Veterans Service Office for referrals to local agencies that help low-income and seniors. (DJ) 5/1/21
