Q678: Some years ago I read a DAV message that all service connect (less than 100%) veterans would be eligible to start getting dental care at VA medical centers. Is this benefit still being considered? If this benefit is not going to be approved, how can I use the Mission Act at a civilian dental clinic?
If you have a question about benefits, compensation, pension or VA related issues please submit here.

A1: VA dental care one of the most restrictive programs the VA administers. The bill, you are making reference too, introduced by Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Calif., aims to phase in dental care at the VA within four years. Now, the department provides dental treatment only to veterans whose dental issues are related to their military service. Brownley said that is equal to about one in 17 VA enrollees being eligible for dental care. The VA vehemently opposes this bill. The House Committee on Veterans Affairs considered the bill, but do not know the outcome. If you are eligible for VA dental care and cannot get your dental work done in a timely manner, you can ask the dentist to refer you to community care. Community care would, if approved, refer you to a dentist that accepts VA. If you go to a civilian dentist on your own thinking that VA will pay you back or pay the dentist, you more than likely will be stuck with the bill yourself. (DS) 3/5/21
A2: This has been in the works for sometime but I have never heard where it has been approved to be put in practice for the VA. The best thing is to check with the enrollment office at your local VA hospital and they can give you the correct answer to your question. (GR) 3/6/21
