Q633: My son turned 18 on December 10, 2020. I am drawing
dependent pay for him being my dependent. He graduates from high school in May 2021. He has been accepted and will start college full time in the fall of 2021. Do I need to notify the VA that he is still in school so that I still get paid for him? If so, how do I notify the VA about this so they do not reduce my compensation pay?
If you have a question about benefits, compensation, pension or VA related issues please submit here.

A1: Yes. Do so immediately. Best way to do it now is go to nearest VA and see VSO. They will help you with paperwork and also u need to provide the college financial aid address and phone number. Bring admission acceptance letter and start date. The VSO will ensure your child imeets requirement and mail everything off. If dependent amount stops while in process, you will get backpay. This is everything that ive done and happened. My son graduate college this spring. Good luck. (DJ) 1/9/21
A2: Yes, to both questions. When a Child turned 18 they are removed from your disability payment. If they are still in High School, you need to show that to the V.A. Now college is a different situation you need to have the college schedule to show that they are still going to school and then you can receive that payment until the reach the age of 23. A3: The day your son turns 18, VA automatically drops him from your VA award. If he is continuing with school, you will need to complete a VA form 21-674 and 21-674a and submit to the VA. Once the request is approved, he will be added back to your award. If a child is going to school under Dependents Educational Assistance, he/she cannot be on your award since he/she receives his/her own money from the VA. (DS) 1/11/21
