Q495: I took the SSB in 1992 for $92K (03E at 16 years). I have a 30% VA disability rating. I received no compensation for this until a couple of years ago. It appears that the SSB was actually a no-interest loan to be recouped from my disability entitlement. How is this legal?
If you have a question about benefits, compensation, pension or VA related issues please submit here.

A1: The simple answer is YES. It is legal. (RJ) 8/4/20
A2: Unfortunately when 500,000 of us were kicked out of the military, or RIFed (Reduction-In-Force) after Desert Storm and paid SSB, DOD failed to explain to us that if you drew VA disability in the future you would have to pay back the SSB before collecting any VA disability. Then once you recieve any military retirement, you have to pay back the taxes on the SSB, even though those taxes were taken out when they paid you the lump sum or monthly payments. This results in a double tax on your SSB you are paying back. Sad, but true! (AC) 8/4/20
A3: You need to contact an Accredited VSO from the DAV, VFW, Am Vets, Am Legion or another Veterans Service Organization. You do not give enough information to give you good answers. Take all of your paper work from the VA. An Accredited Service Officer can assist you and answer all of your questions regarding VA benefits. (GH) 8/4/20
