Q471:  I need some alterations to my home to help me with my disabilities of going up and down stairs, showering, etc. Does the VA provide assistance with home modifications? I live in San Antonio, my doctor says no. Is there financial assistance?  I want to convert my patio to a room with a shower. Thanks.

A1:  Right now I have had the VA to approve a stairlift for my townhouse and 2 different vendors have submitted there bids/estimates to the VA and am waiting for this to be completed I am in a first floor apartment right now paying expensive rent before I can return to my townhouse because I cannot walk up the stairs think this has been like a 3 month situation and still am 4-6 weeks from getting it going the stairlift also the VA can do a walk-in shower.  (DA)  7/20/20

A2:  If you can type then you can read . Go to VA website and read what is available.  (DM)  7/20/20

A3:  1st. Ask yourself if disabilities are service connected or caused by an injury from service connected disabilities?  2nd. Do not listen to your doctor for financial aid. He is a doctor not your Veteran Service Officer.  3rd. An accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO) can provide the necessary application and assist veterans and/or eligible dependents who need help in answering questions and completing forms. If you have a problem contacting your VSO, contact your local commander for the American Legion.  Hope this answers some of your questions.  (GS)  7/20/20

A4:  Yes, there is SOME assistance available to you through the VA. You will need to go to the VA and file for assistance. Additionally you can go to senior services in your local county to help with some thing. I would start with you patient advocate to direct you to the right person at your local VA. I would further reach out to a local service agency such as the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in your local area.  (KD)  7/20/20

A5:  The best way I have found to get modifications done to your home is to have your PCP put in a referral to Prothesis and they will determine what you need done to adapt for your service disabilities.  (GR)  5/14/22
