Q458: I am 100 percent service connected unemployable US veteran. I was tested for many ailments but one in particular I have hearing loss in both ears and also from tinnitus as well. I was issued hearing aids way back when I was diagnosed....now the VA Prostetics clinic is no longer available for veterans, so we are forced to go outside to get our replacement aids. I have the award letter showing all the information of my hearing loss and to what degree from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. How can I go about getting replacement aids as I have had these aids for over four years now? Do I need to pay anything for the aids.... or even postage? What do I need to submit and send to me what I need to fill out and what information is needed? I am currently residing in the Philippines. I have a US retired affairs office where we get our mail.

A1: Your primary care VA doctor will have to put in a prescription for you to get hearing aids. If your facility does not have an audiology clinic, then you will be contacted to be referred to a civilian provider or another VA facility w/ an audiology clinic. (DS) 7/9/20
A2: The VA says that you are eligible for hearing aids.

A3: At my VA Medical Center hearing aids are handled by the Audiology Department. It is probable a problem because you live out of country. Did you ask the Retired military office for help. Where and how do you get healthcare in the Philippines? (AB) 7/9/20
A4: First you have to apply for the disability. Once you get that part out of the way, they (VA) should schedule for a hearing exam either at a VA hospital or the VA audiology center. If the requirements are met, they will measure your ears and order a set of ear hearing aides for you. (AP) 7/9/20
A5: Go see your primary care doctor at the VA and aske to get a hearing test. If you clinic or hospital does not have a hearing clinic they will get you one scheduled. Also if you know of one close ask to be sent there. If the audiologist is recognized by the VA they may send you there, Hearing aids are with the hearing clinics. You will not be charged. You will receive travel pay. I recommend you see an Accredited VSO with the DAV, VFW, American Legion or another Service Organization. Take your VA awards letter and decision letter to a VSO. They can explain everything about your entitlements. You are 100% nothing should cost you. (GH) 7/9/20
