Q126: If I travel out of my home state and become ill or injured, will I be able to use a VA clinic/hospital close to my location? Not a major illness but a minor situation as a serious cold, flu, sprain, or broken bone, etc.
If you have a question about benefits, compensation, pension or VA related issues please submit here.
A1: I got It! While I was out of town I went to the nearest hospital and the VA refused to pay the bill. I wasn't able to pay for it so it is on collections. (AL) 12/16/18
A2: Good question. I would like the answer myself. Thanks. (LB) 9/29/19
A3: I spent the summer in California City, California. While there I was hospitalized four times. The Los Angeles VA covered the cost of the ambulance and refilled my medications for while I was there. Have your ID card with you and you should have no problem using any VA facility. Enjoy your travels. (TR) 11/22/19
A4: Yes. (CS) 11/29/20
A5: Yes you can. Before you travel, check to see which VA facilities are close to where you will be. Also talk to your VA care provider about what you should take with you, so those VA facilities can have access to your VA healthcare records. And if you do need emergency care at a non-VA facility, notify the VA Healthcare System as soon as possible. (DJ) 6/8/21
