Q113:  I was just wondering. I have a 70% disability for PTSD for years and I have been going to the doctors for years for treatment, and I just received my Medicare Statement where my doctor with the VA charged my Medicare and my Supplement Policy for my visit.  Can the VA do that?  I have been with the VA for years and this is the first time they ever charged my insurance for anything and I have been at 70% for years. Just a little confused about this. Can someone give me an answer on what to do about this problem?

A1:   I also have a disability rating for PTSD (50%) among other things.  Since I began in 2016 the VA back charges Medicare & my supplemental policy for ea & every visit for all services. I just thought that's the way it is.  (CC)  9/3/18

A2:  Is your PTSD service connected? Is it your only compensable item?  (JH)  9/3/18

A3:  This has nothing whatsoever to do with your level of disability. If you have Other Insurance coverage, including MediCare, for care covered by both plans, the VA and TriCare have the authority to charge those Insurance plans first. The only exceptions I am aware of are special TriCare and MediCare supplements designed to pay what is left over after all the other plans pay.  (DJ)  9/3/18

A4:  Have you turned 65?  If so, yes, the VA can charge your Medicare.  (RL)  9/3/18
