The Disability Recommended by Most VSOs

It is an unfortunate reality that many veterans who experience a debilitating service-connected disability, such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), also suffer at some point from psychological and emotional conditions related to the disability.  The secondary conditions that manifest from the service-connected disability aren’t just from psychological conditions, but, physicals conditions as well.

For example, a veteran who loses the function of a leg, foot or arm from the ravages of diabetes will sometimes suffer greatly from a secondary psychological condition, especially knowing that the limb may one day be loss.

That’s why, when necessary, many VSOs recommend that their veteran-client also consider depression or anxiety as a secondary service-connected disability claim when it meets Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria.

The DSM is the “cookbook” used by mental health professionals to make accurate assessments and diagnoses about psychological illnesses affecting their clients.
